Where is the Best Health Insurance in South Dakota?

In South Dakota you have several options for health insurance coverage but finding the best coverage may take a bit of effort. It helps to understand what to look for and what some of the South Dakota regulations may be.

South Dakota allows insurers to deny coverage for health conditions in private policies. Those who have had at least twelve months of coverage with health insurance can qualify for the South Dakota Risk Pool to get coverage but carriers are still permitted to apply eliminations riders that permanently exclude certain conditions.

Fortunately, many group plans do not exclude all pre-existing conditions and even private policies can only look back for 12 months during the first year of coverage.

Group plans are also desirable because premiums are lower than they are for private policies. Larger groups represent less risk to insurers so they pass on savings to the members of such groups. Commonly, group insurance is offered on the job through the employer but there is also the option of association group coverage.

Association coverage comes from various large groups of members, often clubs or professional associations, which allow for premiums similar to employer offered plans. One very common such group is the AARP. This group is open to anyone age fifty or older and the spouses of members who may not yet be fifty.

Dues are very low and other than age there are no restrictions for membership. AARP offers several excellent health care plans at affordable rates much better than private coverage.

For those who need private policies, it is important to compare more than simply premiums to find the best health insurance. Coverage or what ranges of services are included is very important as well. A consumer should also compare deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. Another consideration is who is allowed as a provider to be sure of continuity of care.

Another option for medical insurance in South Dakota for children is the CHIP program. This stands for Children's Health Insurance Program and this covers children (under 19) from low income families who are not eligible for Medicaid. This is either no cost or very low cost based on family income.
